2018 International Mechanical Code – 1st Edition
This code establishes the fundamental guidelines for mechanical systems, employing detailed directives and performance criteria to ensure safety and proper functionality. The IMC is built on adaptable, broad principles that allow professionals to incorporate new materials, techniques, and designs without being constrained by outdated regulations. It assists the industry in staying current with new developments while maintaining clear guidelines.
Several important changes have been implemented to improve the clarity of the code and expand its coverage.
There’s new coverage for pollution control equipment and a more recent type of non-metallic duct known as phenolic duct. The code now also acknowledges Type I kitchen hoods that are approved for reduced clearances to combustible materials. There’s also new information about high-volume, large-diameter fans, which are also called high-volume, low-speed fans. Furthermore, the guidelines for sealing Snap-lock and Button-lock duct joints within the thermal envelope have been relaxed, simplifying installation without compromising safety standards.
The IMC establishes minimum requirements for mechanical systems through a combination of specific guidelines and performance-oriented standards. It was developed based on general principles that permit the incorporation of new materials, methods, and designs.
