International Building Code – 2018 Edition
The 2018 International Building Code (IBC) introduces several significant updates that impact building design, safety, and performance. A key revision states that all storage areas—regardless of size—are now counted as part of the space they serve, simplifying compliance with storage regulations. The code also adds new provisions for medical gas systems and university laboratories to enhance safety in these specialized environments. Updates to fire wall regulations clarify that their use is limited to determining allowable building types based on height and area.
Occupancy limits for business spaces have been adjusted to one person per 150 square feet. Additionally, decks and balconies must now support 1.5 times the load of the floor area beneath them, increasing structural requirements. Wood trusses exceeding five feet in length require regular bracing inspections. The code now specifies approved fasteners for certain wood flooring systems and shortens allowable spans for beams and supports in exterior walls. These revisions reflect an ongoing effort to improve building safety, functionality, and environmental compatibility.
